Influences: Physics

I was once a Physics graduate student. Physics is a demanding field that requires many years of study and long hours. A student can find himself in a place where it seems the end is barely in sight and feel like it will take forever to get there.

In particular, I remember studying for the Ph.D. qualifying exam. Each student had two chances to pass this exam, and could not continue his studies at that particular university after failing twice. If that occurred, he had to find another school if he wanted to get any further in Physics.

This was brutal and this was life. I had to prove that I could operate at a certain level or I was out on my ass. Of course, none of my professors put it quite that way, but everyone knew the truth. I studied for three months as if preparing for this one exam was my full time job. Which it was. And I passed.

This was the most draining experience of my life.

However, it did prepare me for many future situations. I learned that some things require sustained effort over a long period of time, and even then success was not guaranteed. I learned patience and that setbacks should not discourage me in the pursuit of a worthy goal. I learned how to maintain motivation when the outcome seemed so far away.

All of these things are needed now as White Haired Man struggles to gain traction in a crowded, difficult, and unforgiving field. Even though we have received some good reviews, in particular from Tenkar, we must double down and forge ahead. We still love creating these adventures. The time and effort required makes the results all the more satisfying.

God bless you! I was a History major, as the sciences would have knocked me for a loop. Besides, with history, there is always a little wiggle room ;)

Of course, career options with a BA in History were a bit limited, but Civil Service has done me well… heh

I often don’t even tell people about this part of my life. My business partner in White Haired Man knew me 8 or 9 years before he discovered that I had studied Physics. Now I’m in IT, so that part of my life seems like the distant past.

I love History. I’m almost always reading a History book or listening to a History audiobook. Sometimes I think about taking some History classes at local colleges, but my plate is just too full.
