Kith’takharos Campaign 32

Read all the Kith’takharos Campaign session recaps here.

With this session, we begin the fifth Kith’takharos adventure, Seal the Rift!

The group gets their wish for a meeting with the Harlass Orn mage Zzhastor Brune. Yet the circumstances are not what they expected: a gathering in Kith’takharos Keep with all the luminaries of Kith’takharos, including Lady Salmissra, Yavanna Culand, Dorian Orsova, and Xanthus Bome. Here Btune explains that the Teleportation Towers caused the downfall of the Harlass Orn, for the type of teleportation magic employed opened a rift between the Veilwalker dimension and normal space, allowing Veilwalkers entry into the world.

And now, the Order of the Jade Leaf has unwittingly allowed the rift to open again by utilizing the Teleportation Towers.

Brune estimates that they have three to five days to seal the rift before Veilwalkers overwhelm the swamp. He urges the characters to perform this deed. Of course, the group realizes the meeting was not the innocent get-together they had expected, but a carefully planned scene designed to pressure them into a new mission. Still, they agree to perform the deed and perhaps harbor a little anger at the way they were manipulated.

Brune will teleport the group into an underground facility hundreds of feet below Kith’takharos Keep, a place where Harlass Orn scholars and mages performed experiments and developed new magical methods. The last project was a device called the Aether Bind that was designed to seal the rift between the Veilwalker dimension and normal space. Unfortunately, Harlass Orn civilization was destroyed before the device could be used.

A few more details complete the picture. The facility was called Nhamah, and Brune will send them into the administrative section. From there, the group can begin their search. The type of teleportation Brune will employ is different from that used in the towers, and so will not attract Veilwalkers. Brune provides the group with a magical ring that will signal him when they wish to be extracted. Bron agrees to wear the magical ring.

Brune casts the teleportation magic and the group arrives in Nhamah, upside down in a locked cell. This was not what Brune had promised! A dim ambient light allows them to see without additional illumination. The mummified corpse of a man leans against a wall, scores of short lines carved into the wall beside him. His body show numerous puncture wounds. He also wears magical gloves and loosely grips a magical rapier. Jory takes the gloves, and Chayl the rapier.

Gabrielle summons a creature to break open the cell. The creature also destroys some gates blocking portions of the corridor outside the cell. An alarm that sounds like a gong reverberates through the corridor, repeating every few seconds. The corridor leads to shafts that descend to another corridor. Ladders have been built into the walls of the shafts.

Jory climbs down one of the shafts. Before he reaches the bottom, two creatures suddenly appear and cling to a nearby wall. Resembling giant mites, the creatures wield long tails tipped with a poison stinger. Hanging onto the ladder with one hand and fighting with the other, Jory fights back at a disadvantage. Other mite creatures appear in the corridor above and attack the rest of the group.

The giant mites are fast and small, but Gabrielle summons an ogre that kills many. The bodies of the mites disappear once they are slain. The creatures are soon destroyed, yet much arcane power has been expended in the battle. Perhaps Nhamah will not be so easy to explore as Brune expected.
