For the past three weeks I’ve been running The Dreamers Awaken adventure in my Kith’takharos campaign. We will probably be done after one more session, although the aftermath of the adventure will play out over many more weeks.
I haven’t run this adventure since our playtests over a year ago. Time has certainly changed my opinion of our work. Now that The Dreamers Awaken is no longer the current project and in the forefront of my mind, I must read it again to understand the details. On an RPGNow rating scale, I’d give the adventure 5 stars for ambition but only 3 for execution. It was painful to realize that we had not achieved our goals.
The writing needs more focus. I found multiple instances where a GM could easily be confused. I bet we could eliminate twenty-five percent of the text and lose no content while making the adventure much easier to understand.
The PDF also has problems. It is not well organized and some information seems scattered about in an odd order. The text in some of the floor plans was impossible to read in the printed copy.
Despite these problems, I think the group will probably consider the adventure a success. In part, this is because it’s the culmination of over twenty game sessions and the events carry a lot of emotional weight. I also wrote the adventure, so I always understand what I meant.
We will probably revisit The Dreamers Awaken at some point. I still believe its a good idea that can realize its potential with a little more work.
